Player Stories:
Brett Warrilow:
Billet families are the unsung heroes of junior hockey; they make it possible for us to do what we love. Not only do our billets offer up their houses, they create a home away from home. I believe having great billets is one of the most important things to help you succeed on and off the ice. My billets, Larry and Debbie, put in so much time and effort that didn’t go unnoticed even with their busy schedules. They always provided great meals, made time to hangout, watch movies or play different games. Whether it was the chirps or inside jokes, it all made me feel like part of the family. Their warmth and generosity has made these past two years unforgettable and truly elevated my junior hockey experience. I would not have had the opportunity to develop into the person and player I am today without their support.
Thank you for everything Larry and Debbie!
Nate Gravelle:
Billeting has been one of the most meaningful parts of my junior hockey journey.
For the past two years, I’ve been lucky enough to call Elmira home while playing for the Sugar Kings — and even luckier to have lived with my billet parents, Linda and Nathan. From day one, they welcomed me like family. Whether it was home-cooked meals after long road trips, the laughs around the kitchen table, or just knowing I had a place to call home, they gave me everything I needed to succeed on and off the ice.
It’s not easy leaving your own family behind to chase your dream, but billets make it possible. They’re the unsung heroes of junior hockey — offering more than just a place to sleep. They provide support, structure, and a second home that you carry with you forever.
To anyone considering becoming a billet family: do it. You have no idea the impact you can have on a player’s life. I’m forever grateful to Linda and Nathan, and I’ll always be thankful for the memories we made together.
Billet Family Stories:
The MacPherson Family:
Two seasons ago, my husband and I decided to open our home to a Sugar King billet upon the urging of our family as we are empty nesters with extra room in our house. Larry and I knew right away that we had a great fit when Brett Warrilow, his parents and sister came to our house to meet us and see where Brett was going to be spending his first season away from his home in Owen Sound.
The Weltz Family:
The Elmira Sugar Kings organization has always made us feel supported and appreciated. It’s not just about hockey – it’s about community, character, and connection. Being a billet family is a gift, and we feel incredibly lucky to have built lifelong memories and friendships through this experience.
